His favorite poem ends up to be Love That Boy, by Mr. Through out the story he keeps reading poems of various styles and every time he reads one, he makes a new one or edits one of the written ones so they sound better. To pretty much summarize what I have been speaking about, the story is about a boy named Jack who likes to write poetry, but too scared to share that fact with his classmates. Walter Dean Myers, he becomes a key character in the book as soon as Jack starts reading his poems. Second, there is Jacks teacher, his teacher encourages him to go on with his poetry as much as he can even though Jacks too embarrassed to write his name on the poems he writes. One of them is Jack, in this story he write poetry but is very embarrassed about it. There are three main characters in this story. The book also isnt so great when it comes to descriptions or different settings so thats the only spot where it takes place. It takes places at Jacks(protagonist) school. This is a book that is written in free verse poetry form. My book is not the best one anyone could ever read, but I would be happy to show you why.

I also liked her more from Hades’ perspective. I’ll admit that as the book progressed, and when Persephone wasn’t playing mortal, I enjoyed her more. But she was also meek, mild, naive and dull Uninteresting for a divine goddess. Persephone was graduating school and had this fantastic intern job as a journalist, carving her own way in the world away from her mother. She’s rebellious & intelligent, but it wasn’t enough. A more established journalist than one barely out of school. While I’m not against journalist Persephone, I think I would have preferred her to be older. I never really thought about what Persephone would do for a career in the real world. I wasn’t a big fan of her mild-mannered reporter – Clark Kent vibes. It’s very much a ‘ What if we still worshiped the Greek Gods of Old in the New World today‘ – mixing Greek mythology elements into our world. I can appreciate the world that she is building. In contrast, others have to grow and evolve into their craft. Clair’s second published book – some new authors come out with fantastic debut or sophomore novels. The writing wasn’t anything to start yelling from rooftops about. I started with A Touch of Darkness, book one in the Hades & Persephone series. Like I said in my blog post, all I saw was that this was a retelling of Hades and Persephone. I went into these books with no expectations and no real idea what they were about. Still, I don’t remember any of the particulars. I have no idea how I discovered these books. It is screen-reader friendly and is accessible to persons with disabilities. In “Couldn’t Hear You Talk Anymore,” the narrator reflects on past trauma and what might have been as she recalls tender moments with another trans woman.Īn ethereal meditation on partnership, sex, addiction, romance, groundedness, and love, the stories in A Dream of a Woman buzz with quiet intensity and the intimate complexities of being human. In “Perfect Places,” a woman grapples with undesirability as she navigates fetish play with a man. In “Hazel and Christopher,” two childhood friends reconnect as adults after one of them has transitioned. Centering transgender women seeking stable, adult lives, A Dream of a Woman finds quiet truths in prairie high-rises and New York warehouses, and in freezing Canadian winters and drizzly Oregon days. Her latest work, A Dream of a Woman, is her first book of short stories since her seminal 2014 collection A Safe Girl to Love. For those of whom Once Upon A Time is their first encounter with Philip Pullman and his work - you will be going out and purchasing the trilogy as soon as you have finished this short story.ĩ/10 Good things do come in small packages. Philip Pullman is one of the most highly respected childrens authors writing today. Anybody can enjoy this book, not just fans of the His Dark Materials trilogy. The presentation is faultless, the size, the illustrations, the board game and of course the story itself are all of the highest quality. The book itself is just shy of one hundred pages. The book opened marvellously with Scoresby crash landing on Navy Odense, I thought that the way he handled this mishap made him an instantly likeable character, Hestar, his daemon only added further to the charm of the book and the characters. Once Upon a Time in the North His Dark Materials (Series) Philip Pullman Author Chris Wormell Illustrator (2023) Lyras Oxford His Dark Materials (Series) (2020) Lyras Oxford. Once Upon A Time In The North is set many years before Lyra's birth, a young Lee Scoresby pilots his recently won (in a poker game) balloon to the Arctic where he gets involved in a deadly confrontation between the government, an oil baron, a crooked politician, a ship's captain, and a hired killer from Lee's past.Īs with Philip Pullman’s other books there are fantasy elements integral to the story but they are included so subtly that you may not even notice. Once Upon A Time In The North is another episode from the universe of His Dark Material including the very first meeting of Lee Scoresby, the Texan balloonist, and Iorek Byrnison, the armoured bear. I still enjoyed the book despite this but it was annoying that I had to skip bits. I ended up skipping pages because I didn’t understand the physics. Now this book is a hard sci-fi, I love hard sci-fi and I really enjoyed all the science-y bits in this, but I found some parts were just a little too technical. The thing I love about this is that her disability is not the whole point of the story, it’s just something she has and despite having it, is still able to get on with her life just like everyone else on board. One thing I found great about it is that the main character is mentally stunted, it’s never properly explained what her problems are, though we learn that it may be caused by living on the ship. Aurora is different because it does not have a plot twist and deals with what happens when the ship gets to it’s destination. I’ve found that most books like this usually occur about halfway through the journey and almost always have some sort of plot twist. I really enjoyed Aurora, it’s one of those books set on a generational ship. Our voyage from Earth began generations ago. The play starts with Henryâs claims to be the rightful heir to the French throne and, after his invasion of France, culminates with his famous and improbable victory at the Battle of Agincourt and the negotiation of the Treaty of Troyes. Written by William Shakespeare around 1599, The Life of Henry the Fifth, more commonly known as Henry V, chronicles the later history of King Henry the Fifth of England and his efforts during Hundred Yearsâ War to reclaim disputed territories in France. The Roman poet leads Dante down into Hell and up the Mountain of Purgatory - to the highest point that unaided natural reason can reach. As a symbol of reason and classical wisdom, the Roman poet Virgil guides Dante in the Inferno and Purgatorio. Dante on Reason and Faithĭante presents a Thomistic view of the relatedness between reason and faith through Virgil and Beatrice, his two guides in the Divine Comedy. To help in this regard, I will describe what the Catholic intellectual tradition teaches and draw from the imaginative illustration provided by Dante, the Catholic Church’s greatest poet. Many of our own people believe that their faith is incompatible with reason, but this does not need to be the case. Before this issue can be addressed on a practical level, it is essential that Church leaders have a firm grasp of what the Catholic intellectual tradition says. This is certainly a pastoral concern for priests, teachers, and catechists. The Catholic faith, in other words, is viewed as irrational and anti-science. As people leave the faith in high numbers, one of the reasons given is that faith and reason - more specifically, scientific reason - are viewed as incompatible. The topic of the relatedness between reason and faith is important.
